Yesterday’s Solution

Security is an illusion. Life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing at all.

— Helen Keller

Helen Keller (1880 - 1967)

Helen Keller, a deaf and blind American author and educator, dedicated her life’s work to the service of persons with disabilities.

Helen lost her sight and hearing as a toddler (19 months) and, with her lifelong nurse, Anne Sullivan (and others), learned to both read and speak and to read lips by placing her fingers on the speaker’s mouth. Upon graduating cum laude from Radcliffe College in 1904, by 1913 she was lecturing on behalf of the American Foundation for the Blind, and later established a $2 million endowment fund. During her lifetime she published several books.

Keller’s childhood training with Sullivan was depicted in William Gibson’s play The Miracle Worker (1959), which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960.
